On Thursday, 8th May, Rochdale Pétanque had the pleasure of assisting with Manchester United FC Foundation’s team-building workshop.
The MUFC Foundation delivers educational and community outreach programs aimed at helping young people make positive life choices by enhancing their health, social wellbeing, and employability. They particularly focus on children and young people from deprived areas or those with additional support needs, using the power of football and Manchester United to inspire and empower.
Six Pétanque players demonstrated the basics of the game, including some of the rules, to 34 participants. Following the introduction, they provided coaching and acted as referees during the participants’ team competitions, which involved pairs and triples in a melee format.
The participants displayed a competitive yet friendly spirit, quickly picking up the game. The scores were close, resulting in a tie between two teams with three wins each and a total point difference of +11. This led to a one-end playoff, which determined the winning team. Both the winners and runners-up received medals.
Rochdale Pétanque thoroughly enjoyed being part of the day, and everyone appeared to have a lot of fun. Pétanque is an inclusive sport suitable for all ages and abilities, and we hope this experience inspires some participants to take up Pétanque as a sport and encourages young people to get involved.
